LOUGH BANE ANGLERS: Last Friday night, in brutal thundery conditions, Lough Bane anglers braved the elements and fished an evening Peter competition. A few fish were showing and some nice trout were caught on the night. Ciaran Flynn of Kelly was top rod with 3.62lbs, Colin Cahill from Killucan was 2nd with 3.46lbs, 3rd was Jim Condron 3.07lbs and 4th was Martin Augney with 3.06lbs. Bane anglers are back in action on Friday July 26th and host another evening fly competition from 7pm-10pm.
WHITELAKE ANGLERS: It’s great to see young anglers getting involved in the angling game and Noel McCabe tells us that the St Feichin National School competition was a great success. Archerstown angler Joshua McCabe was top Junior Angler with a fine trout of 3lbs 10oz, Kyren Skey of Castlepollard was 2nd with another super fish of 3lbs 8oz and young Trim angler James Gallagher was in fine form taking 3rd place with 2lbs 14oz. Great stuff from the young Whitelake anglers and we hope to hear more of their angling adventures this summer.
I.T.F.F.A ON LENE: Denis Goulding PRO of the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association sends in details from the recent I.T.F.F.A. team club championships fundraising competition fished on Lough Lene in North Westmeath. Here is what Denis had to say about this year’s championships: Many thanks to all the Anglers that turned up yesterday to fish the ITFFA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FUNDRAISER SPONSORED BY SOUTHSIDE ANGLING. 100 Anglers took part in the event. Huge thanks to Tom Fagan and the Lough Lene Committee for all their help and allowing us to use their facilities. To Stan McKeon for organizing all the score sheets and raffle tickets. To Michael Monaghan and Michael Callaghan for all there help and support leading up to the event and on the day. I must also thank Noel Shields. This Competition takes a lot of organizing so thanks again Noel. A big thanks to Julie Gerry for selling raffle tickets, and Noel Farrah who sponsored Trophies. Plus all those who sponsored prizes for the raffle, Lough Conn & Cullin Anglers, Tourmakeady Anglers, Lough Sheelin Anglers, Garrison Anglers, Tom “Doc” Sullivan, Tom Fagan, Noël Shields, Jim Glynn, and Kelly Kettle. Denis reported that Lough Lene fished hard but there were fish to be caught. As we tallied the scorecards there were 85 fish Caught and Released by 100 anglers. It was obvious the snail feeders had taken a day off. Corrib Anglers of Galway were crowned 2019 I.T.F.F.A. Captained by Tom “Doc” Sullivan, other team members were Tommy O, Loughlin, Mike Keady, and Barry Fox. Lough Bane club members of North Westmeath produced a fantastic Championship display and finished 2nd John Mulvany, Colin Cahill, Noel McLoughlin, and Liam McLoughlin fished for Bane. Owel anglers were also on song and captained by Mick McCormack finished 3rd, with Ciaran Newman, Paddy Ward, and Padraig Fahy representing Owel. Denis Goulding finished his report on the 2019 Championships, thanking Dave McBride of Southside Angling who presented each team member with Grays Rods down the line to 3rd place. The event raised 680 euro in the Raffle and took in 3360 euro for 24 entries one team paid last year. So we all raised 4140 euro on the day. Hopefully this competition will get stronger and stronger as the years go by, we had 6 new teams this year and we hope to have more next. Lough Lene is bigger than Chew Water and is well capable of holding big competition.
CRACKING COARSE FISHING: Some of the Midlands Coarse Anglers were also in action recently and Ciaran O’Donnell had a beautiful looking Ennel perch. Also, on the canals, local angler Richie Ward got some lovely tench and bream on a recent angling session.
