YOUNG ANGLERS HAVING FUN

Another hectic week in the Angling World and we had mixed fishing and weather since last weeks Angling report. Sheelin and Ennell are producing good trout as the may fly season is in full swing. Lene also producing good browns and rainbows, no May Fly on Lene but nice hatches of Olives and Buzzers have the fish surface feeding. We had some young anglers out fishing last week, and Danial McMullan from bray boated his first trout. Plus Jack Egan and dad John had some nice pike on Derravaragh.Next Sunday May 25th Derravaragh host the Jimmy Nally Memorial Cup and Ennell host the Rex Beaumont Cup.

DANIALS FIRST TROUT. Thomas McMullan of Maxol Oil was drifting across Westmeath last week and had young son Danial on board. We were blessed with brilliant sunshine, and calm enough conditions, and the plan was to try and get Danial his first ever trout. On the day we fly fished and trolled, and as luck would have it landed a few lovely trout. Danial is only 7 years old but is really hooked on angling, and in years to come will look back at the pictures we took on his first day fishing here in Westmeath.

JACKS FIRST PIKE. Also enjoying a few days here in Westmeath were Portlaois lads John Egan and son Jack who is only 6 years old. John is a very keane pike angler and has fished many of our lakes over the years, but it was jacks first outing on a boat, and he had a fantastic time. We fished Derravaragh in choppy conditions, and boated 6 pike on a variety of colorful lures. We also done a few hours on Lene in brutal wet conditions, and Jack really enjoyed his few days. As you can see from this weeks photographs Jack had no problem holding his prized catch, and has some great fishy stories to tell his schoolmates this week.

LENE TROUT. Quite a few anglers are Out & About on Lene and some lovely brown and rainbow trout are feeding hard on the surface. It’s strange but we don’t really see May Fly on Lane till late June, but at the moment there are good hatches of Buzzers and Olives keeping the trout surface feeding. I met Andy Young and Eugene Fagan of Dublin on Lene last weekend and they were having a great day out, catching many fish on dry fly. Eugene is originally from the Multyfarnham area so many readers know him quite well. The ponytail taxi driver with a Jumper full of Flies, great character.

SHEELIN & ENNELL TROUT. Some nice trout coming off Ennell and Sheelin are the May Fly season gets into full swing. Angus Byrne of Rochfortbridge had a few lovely fish from Sheelin pulling wet flies, plus Nicky Shaw of Shaw’s Hardware was also in the thick of the action while fishing with Mick McCormack. On Ennell Tosh Grimes and Alan Tyrrell are warming up for the Rex Beaumont Cup, the deadly duo had some nice Ennell fish last week. Also Shane “Kegs” Keegan and Karl Martin of Rochfortbridge had fish to 6lbs reciently. Lough Ennell Anglers will host the rex Beaumont Cup this coming Sunday May 25th.Fishing is from 11am-7pm, check in Whitebridge Bay. Club competition new members more than welcome on the day.

JIMMY NALLY CUP. Also this coming Sunday Lough Derravaragh Anglers will host the Jimmy Nally Memorial Cup fly-fishing competition. This catch & release competition will be fished from 11am-6pm,from the Donore shore. May fly are up on Derravaragh and all going well some nice trout will be caught. This is a club competition and new members are welcome to join on the day.

LEINSTER CHAMPIONSHIPS.I.T.F.F.A. Pro Joe Keena tells us some fantastic fish were caught at this years Leinster Championships fished on Lough Owel.DJ Byrne was top rod with 16lbs 11oz, and picked up the Corcoran Cup presented by Leinster I.T.F.F.A. Chairman Noel Shields. Carl Owens had the heaviest trout of 3lbs 3oz, and won the Donnelly Cup. Up on 100 Anglers competed in the 2014 Leinster Championships.

THAT’S IT. All going well next week news from the Edward Hughes Memorial Cup hosted by Glore Anglers on Slevins lake reciently. Plus news from Gaulmoylestown where winners of the Dublin Angling Initiative (DAI) and National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland (NCFFI) draw had a day out. Tight Lines till next week.
