WHITELAKE ANGLERS & WEEKLY REPORT

WHITELAKE ANGLERS: Noel McCabe of the Whiteake sent in some cracking photographs from the recent opening day Monster Trout Competition. Some super rainbow trout were caught and this included a first for Lauren King of Oldcastle. The competition was won by Jody Fagan of Athboy with a super trout of 5lbs 6oz. Also in the senior section was Tommy Fagan who had a 3lbs 11oz fish and Stephen King rattled the scales with 3lbs 13oz. The Junior section was won by Reece McCabe with a fine trout of 3lbs. Jack McCrossan had a fish 2lbs 11oz and Luke Meyler weighed in a beauty of 2lbs 7oz. These are super rainbow trout and well done to all the young anglers who ventured out on the Whitelake.

OWEL TROUT: Lough Owel is quite high at the moment and some cracking trout are being caught on the fly and troll. I had a beauty of 3lbs 6oz last week in calm conditions and it hammered a small trout colored lure. Rob Connor of Clara Co. Offaly was also out on Owel with his faithful dog Ted.  Rob, who I fished with some years back, was fly fishing and pulling lures, got a few hits, and landed a nice fish 2lbs.

PIKE WITH BIRTH MARK: I had a super day pike fishing last weekend with Dominic Rickhard, and we boated 10 pike on colored Paddle Tail Lures. The pike were in mint condition and the best measured at 104cm. Also on that day, Dominic landed a beautiful colored pike which had a very unusual mark on its body like a birthmark. You just never know what’s lurking in our lakes and rivers.
