It was an interesting week here in the Angling World. Some of our lakes closed on September 30th, but it was full steam ahead on Owel and Ennell. This coming Sunday October 12th it’s the end of season trout competition, and its hard to believe another Angling season has drifted by. Lakeland Anglers were in action last Sunday October 5th and some cracking trout came from Owel and Ennell. Mick Devanney had a super fish of 2.752lbs from his beloved Ennell and picked up the late Peadar Caffrey Cup, presented by Dinny. On the pleasure side of angling my pal Giovanni Dionislo of Turin in Italy was back for 3 days fishing, and he had some characters with him. The fishing was magic, and Mullingar has being adopted by Turin anglers. It’s a very small world now, and before our super trout was released it was on Facebook in Turin. The lads were over pike fishing, and it’s looking good here in Westmeath for the winter piking.
TURIN BOYS. Earlier in the week my pal from Turin in Italy was over for a few days. This time around Giovanni brought Enrico Ponzone, Alessandro Rondoletto, and Marco Getti on board. The lads had a fantastic few days fishing here in Westmeath and were based in the Newbury Hotel and McCormack’s B& B. They dined in some of our town’s top restaurants, and were over the moon with the food and service. On the angling scene it was all hands on deck, and we boated some monster pike, Alessandro caught a trout of a lifetime, and will never forget his few days in town. The huge trout hit a big lure as we were trolling for pike, and after a quick pic the fish was returned.
LAKELAND ANGLERS.Unfortunally I missed the Lakeland Anglers end of season competition, but made it back to town for the presentation in Caffreys Lounge. It was a super day on Owel and Ennell, and my postman Alan Tyrrell better go and do the Lotto. Alan “Cysco” Tyrrell had 3 cracking fish from Ennell and was just piped for 1st place by Mick Devanney. I reckon the post will be late in Dalton Park this week as the lads will be talking fish. Presentation took place in caffreys Lounge a Mecca for anglers, and Niall Caffrey presented the prizes. Also up for grabs was the Lakeland Anglers Angler of the year prize, fished on their trip to Lough Conn earlier in the season. John Tyrrell was presented with a beautiful prize by Niall Caffrey on behalf of the Caffrey Family.
END OF SEASON. This coming Sunday October 12th our brown trout season closes. On the day Owel will hold a competition with proceeds going towards the stocking of Owel. Ennell have a sweep stake competition, and we will be back in Caffreys at 8pm for the final weigh-in of 2014. All going well we will be in the thick of the action, and will be Out & About in Caffreys that evening.
LENE CLOSED FOR TROUT. Lough Lene closed for trout fishing on September 30th, but we can still catch up with some perch and pike on this enchanted North Westmeath Fishery over the winter months. On Sunday September 28th Lough Lene Angling Association hosted the chairman’s prize and some super fish came on board. On the day Multyfarnham angler Kevin Keogh rattled the scales with a brown trout of 2.92kg. Kevins angler partner was Frank Brennan. 2nd and 3rd place was a close contest and the fish had to be measured. Noel Shield, one of Ireland top fly anglers finished 2nd fishing with Barry Fox. Brian Brennan and John Brennan finished 3rd in the pairs competition.
MISSING PHOTO. Last week we mentioned Alan o, Keeffe of Lakepoint with a super trout from Derravaragh. Unfortunately we had no space for all my fishy pics, so hopefully it will run this week. Alan is also a keen piker, and over the coming winter months I reckon we will hear more from Alan and his angling adventures.
THAT’S IT. Next week news from the end of season competition. Plus we will be gearing up for the winter pike & perch season. I got a fantastic magazine from America recently, and I am not one for reading but he pics say it all. The target fish is Crappie yes, and they are similar in size to our perch. The article covers Crappie fishing with the weedless crappier slider. This method I have to try on our perch. Tight lines till next week.
