PIKE ON THE PERCH FRY & WEEKLY REPORT

TROUT ON BUZZERS: We are told Lough Ennell is producing a few fish late into the evening and Colm Hope had some cracking wild brown trout the past few weeks on buzzers fishing late into the night. Colm and son Emmett live right on the shores of Lough Ennell and when the evening looks good for buzzer fishing they just push out the boat. I was on Ennell last week and even in calm sunny conditions some nice fish were feeding on hatching welshman buttons, but it was impossible to cover these feeding fish in such conditions.

PIKE ON THE PERCH FRY: Colin Russell of Scotland was over last weekend with his wife and daughter, staying in Bloomfield House Hotel. They were part of a strong team competing in the Show Jumping Festival at Mullingar Equestrian Center. Colin managed to get a few hours fishing done as the teams competed, and was really impressed with the midland lakes. Colin spent a few hours trying to catch an Ennell trout on dry flies, but did not hook up with any fish. Mind you, he did have a few fish come to his fly. We changed tactics and did a bit of pike fishing, the Ennell pike are certainly hitting the perch fry at the moment. Colin had a cracking pike into the double figures on small perch fry imitations.

SOUTH AFRICA ANGLER: Local pike Guide Barry Darby had a few friends out fishing last week and boated some huge pike. Peter Braithwaite from South Africa rattled the nets with huge pike well into high double figures. Barry has certainly clocked up a huge number of pike already this season and a 30lbs specimen just might be on the cards. Just looking at the specimen report of 2015, no lake specimen pike were recorded, and only 3 river specimen pike were caught. Two of these came from the River Shannon and one from the Barrow. If you are interested in what’s happening on the specimen scene have a look at www.irish-trophy-fish.com

OWEL PIKE COMPETITION:  Lough Owel anglers are holding a pike competition on Sunday 19th June. Up for grabs is the Glen Owel Cup and fishing is from 11am-6pm. Check in at Tullaghan or Mullallys Shore. I hope to give Owel a lash later this week, and we will have some news on the pike fishing from Owel.
