We had a few choppy days recently here on our Midland lakes and rivers. I met quite a few anglers drifting along the River Inny, and they were having some fun catching good pike, and some colorful perch. Also on the pike I.F.I. Paul Burke Angling Information officer was back on Westmeath waters. This time Paul had Pascal Leherissier Editor of Brochet/Zander Magazine in France and his pal Boris Mouillard out on Ree and Ennell. Also this week news of some local pike competitions coming on Line. Plus we got the winning photograph from the recent Chairman’s pair’s competition fished on Lene.Multyfarnham angler Kevin Keogh was Top rod on the day.
INNY BEAUTY. Last week Ben Entwisle of Middlewick near Chesmire in England was over celebrating his 30th Birthday. Joining Ben was his good lady Dekeisma Pardoe, and they had a cracking day here in Westmeath. It was a bit choppy for our bigger lakes, but Ben had some lovely pike on the River Inny, and is planning a return trip with club mates in the near future. The river is still a bit weedy in places, but in great shape, and colorful lures worked a treat for Ben.
ENNELL CRACKERS. Paul Burke of I.F.I. was back in Westmeath last week and had the editor of French magazine Brochet/Zander Pascal Leherissier and his pal Boris Mouillard on board. The lads fished quite a few waters across Ireland during their stay including Lough Ree and Ennell. Lough Ree was tough going and strong winds kept them holed up in the Inner Lakes at Coosan. On Ennell the lads boated some nice pike on Bulldog Lures, and hopefully we will see some good reports about our pike fishing in Brochet/Zander magazine.
DERRAVARAGH PIKE COMPETITIONS. In the coming weeks Derravaragh Anglers will host two club competitions. On November 9th the Moffatt Cup will be fished, and the following Sunday November 16th they host their Annual Christmas pike competition. Both events will take place from Donore Shore, and they will be fished from 11am-4pm.Club members will be contacted by text message if there are any changes in these dates or if the weather plays havoc on the day.
CASHEL ANGLERS. Newtowncashel Anglers hold their annual club boat pike competition this coming Sunday November 2nd on Lough Ree. All boats out from Barley Harbor at 11am.First prize is a Sheelin 19ft boat. No fish finders allowed, and all prizes sponsored by Sheelin Boats. More on this please contact Cashel Angling Club on 086-3410123.
BROWNIE FOR KEVIN. Some weeks back Lough Lene Angling Association hosted the end of season Chairman’s competition, and it proved a huge success. We featured the results some weeks back, and this week I include the photograph of Kevin Keogh of Multyfarnham who won the competition with a super brown trout of 2.92kg.Kevins angling partner on the day was Frank Brennan of Crookedwood, also featured in the photograph, which is courtesy of my good friend Derek Evans Angling correspondent with The Irish Times.
FANCY A DAY AT THE RAINBOW TROUT. The popular AnnamoeTrout Fishery winter league is up and running. It’s a lovely rainbow fishery situated near Laragh, County Wicklow, and I have fished it quite often. Some cracking prizes are sponsored by Southside Angling, and it would make a great day out for local fly anglers. The first heat took place on Saturday 18th October and Eighty-three rainbows were caught by seventeen anglers. More heats taking place on Saturday November 1st, November 19th, and November 29th, with final taking place on 13th December. More on this give Brian Nally a bell on 086-2598563.
THAT’S IT. We hope to get cracking on the winter perch fishing quite soon, I tried out a new system on Ennell last week, and it worked well. Hopefully the wind will settle in the coming week, and we get back out on Ennell and Derravaragh.Tight Lines till next week.
