Lough Owel has an explosion of small sticklebacks, and the trout are really feeding hard on the pin fry. Its fantastic fishing pulling a team of wet flies through the choppy water, and the takes are savage at times. I had a cracking rainbow of 3lbs 15oz over the weekend on Owel, and it was in mint condition. I also met local anglers Mick McCauley of Patrick Street and Warren Dardis of Portloman, and they also had a few nice fish on the troll. Kevin and Adam Bushe were back in Mullingar last week with Dad Graham and they had great sport catching pike and perch here in the Midlands. On the competition scene Owel anglers will host the Dan Mullally evening competition today Wednesday August 6th. Plus Lough Lene Anglers will host the Mick Healy competition on Friday August 8th.
PIN FRY. Over the bank Holiday weekend the Owel trout went hard on the Pin fry on Owel, and some super trout were caught. Their is a huge explosion of sticklebacks on Owel, and trout, pike, and perch are feeding hard on the fry. The lake was very quite over the weekend, and those who did brave the windy wet weather were rewarded with fantastic fishing. I boated a rainbow trout on Owel last Saturday weighing 3lbs 15oz, and it was in mint condition. Quite a few rainbows are showing up on Owel, and some local anglers are wondering how they got into the lake. The brown trout are also in super condition, and Marty Smith had a few great fish on Dabblers fished on a Midge tip line. I dropped into Portloman for lunch one of the days on Owel and met local anglers Mick McCauley from Patrick Street and his fishing pal Warren Dardis of Portloman. The lads love their few hours out on Owel, and had some nice fish on the troll. The fish took Lene Minnows, and Tazmanian Devil Lures.
BUSHE LADS BACK IN MULLINGAR.Wickloe brothers Adam and Kevin Bushe were back on the Midland lakes last week with Dad Graham. It’s getting to be a regular trip for the boys as they enjoy their school holidays. On their last Angling adventure here around Mullingar they boated some beautiful colored Perch, and hard fight pike on a variety of colorful Lures.
DAN MULLALLY COMPETITION. Lough Owel Anglers will host the Dan Mullally evening competition tonight Wednesday August 6th. This evening competition will be fished from 7pm, with check-in at Tullaghan and Mullally Shore. It’s a club competition and new members are welcome on the day. As mentioned above the lake is fishing well, and some good fish should be caught .The competition will finish at 11pm, and all going well some big Owel trout will move just before dark.
MICK HEALY CUP. On Friday August 8th Lough Lene Anglers will host the Mick Healy Cup, and once again fishing is from 7pm-11pm.Starting and finishing at Fagan’s Point, with C.L.F. Transport sponsoring the competition. I was not on Lene in recent days, but have received some reports of good fish taking dry flies out across deep water. Lough Lene Anglers will also host the Interprovincial on Saturday August 30th, so quite a few anglers will be Out & About the North Westmeath Lake come end of August.
ENNELL TROUT. Last week I mentioned some nice fish were coming from Ennell, and forgot to include Delvin Angler Denis Vaughan photograph with a cracking Ennell trout. Ennell is still worth a shot late into the evening, and you might just catch a good trout. The Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup will be fished on Sunday August 24th from 11am-7pm, and I will have more on this in the coming weeks.
WORLD CUP ON MASK. By now the World Cup on Mask will be won by some lucky angler. The qualifiers were fished from Thursday 31st July till Sunday August 3rd with final on Bank Holiday Monday. I made it into the final along with some more fellow Midland Anglers and will have full results and photographs in next weeks Angling Focus. The World Cup winner received a new 19ft Anglers Fancy Boat, 15HP Yamaha Engine, Loomis Fly Rod and a Watch.
THAT’S IT. We have a lot of fishy photographs this week, and hopefully will fit them in. If not they will be up on my Angling site later in the week. Plus we hope to have some news on the Pike scene from across the Midlands. Tight Lines till next week.
