LAKELAND ANGLERS ON CONN

LAKELAND ANGLERS: John Tyrrell of Lakeland Anglers tells us the recent Lakeland Anglers trip to Lough Conn was an enjoyable few days, with some nice trout caught. On Friday, day one of the trip, Mullingar angler Declan Murphy was top rod with a gross weight of trout 2.850lbs. Killucan angler Colin Cahill had the best fish on Friday of 1.556lbs. On Saturday John Grimes won with 3.510lbs and Murray Lowe of Scotland, a regular angler here in the Midlands and Lough Ennell Club member, had the heaviest trout weighing 1.638lbs. On Sunday, local Postman Alan Tyrrell was top rod with 2.348lbs and Tom Gorman had the best fish of 1.418lbs. At the end of the 3 days angling, Brendan Murray won the Sammy Smith Cup and Tom Gorman picked up the Peadar Caffrey Cup. The Niall Caffrey sponsored prize was won by Murray Lowe. Lakeland Anglers would like to thank sponsors David O’Malley, Brian Conlon, Nicky Shaw, Niall Caffrey, Brian Masterson, Aquafix Roofing and Millie Walsh. Plus a special thanks to John Dooner for organizing the trip and our thanks here in Angling Focus to John Tyrrell for the results and presentation pictures.

LENE: Lene anglers are having a bit of fun these days, as some nice trout are being caught by some up and coming young anglers. Aidan Joyce of Maynooth was down with some pals and they caught quite a few trout on the troll. Dr. Peter Watson and his son Finn of Howth enjoyed a trip and will return, I am sure, in the coming weeks. Martin Kelly of Athboy took advantage of the day off last week due to the Elections closing schools and had a great day with his daughter Grace. On the day, Grace netted 6 trout which were returned and lost quite a few more.

PADDY DOLAN TROPHY/SHIELD: On Sunday 9th June Lene Anglers will fish the Paddy Dolan Trophy / Shield pike competition. Lough Lene pike competitions are open events and it will be fished from 11am-5pm, starting and finishing at Fagan’s Point. Last week we mentioned that young Chris Barry won the Wardell Cup for pike on Lene and we have the presentation picture of Chris receiving the Cup from Chairman Tom Fagan.

MASK FEROX: Kinnegad angler Mick Darby was in the thick of the action on Lough Mask recently and produced some huge Ferrox trout. Mick had one savage trout of 15lbs 6oz and it’s a beautiful looking trout. Mask is quite a big stretch of water and if you are planning a trip it may be best to get some local knowledge. Hugh O’Donnell of Clonbur House has boats for hire on Mask and Corrib and he can be contacted on 087-0537791.

BROSNA RUBBISH: In recent months the River Brosna along the town stretch at Austin Friars was in a mess with oil millage leaking into the river. There is still a slight bit of oil on the river, but now quite a bit of rubbish is building up on it also. As far as trout are on the river I was surprised to see so many fish topping on the surface on taking small flies.
