10 YEARS AND BACK ON THE MIDLAND LAKES: Thierry Marc from France was drifting across Ireland last week with his pal John McCarron of Malahide in Dublin. The lads had a wet few days in the west of Ireland and contacted me for a few hours pike fishing. I fished with Thierry 10 years back on Owel and this time we spent a few hours on Derravaragh. The big pike were not on the move, but we did get a few nice fish pushing 6-7lbs in weight.
FIRST PIKE FOR TIM: Another two lads enjoyed a day’s fishing on Derravaragh last week and Tim Pakikho had his first pike fishing with his dad Valerii . It was a blustery showery day on the lake and we trolled with colourful lures. Tim spent some time in Mullingar working in the Lidl warehouse in Robinstown, so we might see him back out on the lake in the future.
WHYTE BROTHERS OF MOUNT STREET: Former Mullingar brothers Gerry and Joe Whyte originally of Mount Street were in touch with me recently reguarding a trip on Ennell. The lad’s late dad was Ned Whyte, who had a boat on the Brosna for years back in the day, near Butlers Bridge. They revisited the area where their Dad had his hut and after 40 years, evidence of the structure was still there. Gerry and Joe took a boat from Lilliput and ventured down to the Brosna and on to Dysart Island where they spent their younger days on Ennell.
HIGH FLYERS JET INTO TOWN: Last week the lads from Dublin Airport landed in Mullingar for an evening fly fishing on Lene. It was a late night fishing and the Buzzers that came on the lake at dark were priceless. Neil Moran and his pal Cillin McAnn had a few lovely fish and Cillin boated his first trout on the fly. We are working on getting the lads down for another trip and maybe a stopover in the Annabrook House Hotel.
ENNELL ANGLERS: Lough Ennell Trout Preservation Association hosted the Con Hope sponsored Ennell Perpatual Cup last Sunday. Martin McGorian won with a trout of 2.37lbs, and Dave McBride was 2nd with 2.06lbs. John Tyrrell, Competition Captain, thanked all who fished on the day gave a special mention to Con Hope and family for sponsorship. Chairman David O’Malley presented the Cup to Martin McGorian.
