DERRAVARAGH TROUT ON THE DUCK FLY & WEEKLY REPORT

DERRAVARAGH TROUT: It was good to see a few more nice Derravaragh trout being caught on the fly lately. Duck Fly have eventually started to hatch on Derravaragh and well-known local angler Richard McCabe was in the thick of the action. Richard had a pair of trout weighing 5lbs and they were caught on Duck Fly Nymphs. Richard retired some years back from Westmeath County Council, he has fished Derravaragh for quite a number of years and is regarded as one of our top fly anglers here in the Midlands. We hope to hear more from Richard as the season progresses.

OWEL TROUT: Once again, Owel produced some nice fish last week on both the troll and fly. There was a few Duck Fly and Black Buzzers scattered across Owel and in sheltered bays a few fish were surface feeding. Trevor Higginbothan from Wastington D.C. caught his first Owel trout and was really dressed for the chilly conditions on Owel. Local anglers Tony English and Danny Cole also had a few nice fish with Tony getting a fish pushing 4lbs. John Dooner and Charlie Greville were also out on Owel and had Lauran Deacy onboard, who is John’s granddaughter. Lauren loves her day out on the lake with her Granddad John and got a priceless photograph that will be brilliant to look back on in years to come.

PEADAR CAFFREY CUP: Lough Lene competition captain Pat Brown sent us in the results and some cracking pictures from the recent Peadar Caffrey Memorial Cup. Barry Fox produced the winning catch weighing an impressive 2.12kg. Karl Owens finished 2nd with 1.96kg and Freddie Miller was 3rd with 1.80kg. Lough Lene Angling Association are celebrating their 60th Anniversary this year and there was a lovely feature in the Westmeath Topic last week. It included some pictures of competition presentations over the years, and also some of our well-known anglers who have passed away.
