River Championship by Joe Keena

Well done to Joe Winder who caught 47 beautiful trout, scored 2165 points, and won Irish Trout Fly Fishing Associations (ITFFA) Leinster Rivers Championship Trophy. The 2014 match was hosted by North Kildare Trout and Salmon Angling Association and took place at the River Liffey, Newbridge on 18th May.

Nineteen entries were received for this competition from which five anglers are selected to represent Leinster at the National Championship. The Liffey was in perfect condition with good water levels and clarity and the Liffey provided some absolutely fabulous action. With 16 anglers returning 421 trout, the largest of which measured 38cm, this is testament to the exvellent trout angling that the Liffey continues to provide.

Joe will go forward to represent Leinster at the 2014 National Championship which will also take place on the River Liffey, Newbridge, on 7th June 2014. Joe will be joined by Kevin Dunne who caught 33 fish for 1842 points and 4 place points, Peter Doherty who had 45 fish for 1995 points and 5 place points, Donal Monaghan who had 45 fish for 1995 points and 6 place points and Albert Mulhall who had 1967 points and 7 place points. Substitutes for the 2014 Leinster Team will be Anthony Toft who had 1967 points and 7 place points and Tony Doherty who had 711 points and 8 place points.

The River Liffey is an absolutely fabulous game angling venue which produces several specimen trout annually. With the mayfly and olive fishing in full swing the Liffey is well worth a visit and effective flies would include the Grey Flag, Ginger Quill, Greenwells Glory and various spider and nymph patterns. Visiting anglers should consult with local angling clubs to ensure that they have the necessary permission to fish their water.

We would like to wish the Leinster Team the very best of luck as they begin preparations for the National Championship!
