Well here we go and already Easter Weekend has caught up on us poor anglers. It has being a very busy week in the Angling world and we have some gallery of photographs to get through. Anglers from all over Europe enjoyed a few days here in Mullingar, plus the locals had a ball on Owel last Sunday for the Ace Cup. All going well we will have more Europeans coming over and checking out the Angling in Westmeath. I have put pen to paper for Predator Magazine in England, and it has some following in the Angling World. We have a lot of fishy news this week, and I more than likely will forget something.
FAGAN TAKES MCNALLY CUP.Whitelake Anglers fished the David McNally Memorial Cup recently and some super trout came on line. Jody Fagan rattled the scales with a fish 3lbs 2oz to take Top Rod, with Ray McLoughlin 2nd 2lbs 11oz, and 3rd Ciaran Flynn 2lbs 9oz.The Junior anglers had a great day out with Xena Fagan taking 1st place 2nd was Oisin McCabe and 3rd Daire Moore.Whitelake Anglers are back in action on May 18th when the Joe Farrelly Memorial Cup will be fished. On Sunday April 26th mass will be held for deceased members in Fore.
SMITH TOP ROD ON OWEL.Lough Owel trout preservation association hosted their first club competition of 2014 last Sunday. It was a blustery choppy day on Owel, but some nice fish came on board. Dundalk angler Declan smith topped the day with a lovely Owel fish of .970kg,Mullingar angler Morris Gorman flew the flag for Westmeath hand took 2nd place, with Dub Martin McGorial 3rd, and Shay Cash 4th. The Ace Cup was presented to Lough Owel trout preservation association by the Buckley family and Oliver Buckley presented Declan with his prize. THE FRENCH CONECTION.Guillaume Dupuis moved over the Ireland from France some years back, and is really enjoying his fishing. On Owel last week he boated some lovely trout, and is really hooked on fishing here in the Midlands. Now living in Rhode Co., Offaly I reckon we will see more of Guillaume and some of his pals from France chilling out on the lakes.
ZURICK LADS. The Westmeath Lakes is a Mecca for visiting Anglers, and we don’t really push this. Last week a group of lads from Switzerland spent a few days checking out our fantastic lakes and rivers. They had some super pike, and also cracking trout. Brothers Robert and Phillip Meierhofes was joined by angling pals Marco Lussi and Chris Grossmann.I photographed the lads on Derravaragh, and Chris who is big into his filming got some savage takes here in Westmeath. Chris has some serious camera gear and covers snow boarding back home in Switzerland.
