Yep the weather had a huge effect on the number of fish caught in this year Kells Anglers Association Sheelin Classic Fly Fishing Competition. As we gathered at Kilnahard Pier for the 11am start we knew it was going to be tough. Prior to the Classic the lake was fishing it’s socks off, and even though we had brilliant sunshine, like many competitors I was expecting to move a few fish. Not the case as little or no fly drifted out across the lake, and only 3 trout were produced at the 6pm finish.
Mind you, there were a few sad stories of the one that got away, but as you know, those ones don’t count. Still it was a cracking day out and I met some wonderful Angling characters.
FACES & KILNAHARD PIER. As I mingled with anglers at Kilnahard I met Colm Lynch of East Coast Angling, chatting to pals John Baker and Ruairi Coleman. Honest Dave McBride was caught on camera getting sound information from Balbriggan Mick Kelly, as was John Cosgrove. John McGurl was busy tying up his cast.
Gerry Timoney and Eddie McFadden were like two school Boys sitting on the Pier. Master Chefs Liam McLaughlin and Dave Connor were frying up at the Van. John Coughlan and Derek O’Brien were chatting to Lorraine Morgan who was busy sorting our entries. Des Elliott was purring on the pier with his constant companion.
Plus Neville Barnard the 73 years old Moy Co. Tyrone Angler had made another Sheelin Classic. Neville told me he had a rough few months’ health wise since I photographed him at the 2012 World Cup on Mask. Its great to see you back up and fishing Neville.
WINNERS & PRESENTATION. As mentioned 3 Anglers caught fish, and Dominic Kerrigan took top prize of a new 19Ft Sheelin Boat and Trailer, The Dave Connor Perpetual Cup, and a beautiful Tipperary Crystal Vase. Dominic is from Belcoo Co. Fermanagh. Stillorgan Co.Dublin Angler finished 2nd and picked up a 5Hp 4 Stroke Engine, plus a lovely Cavan Crystal Vase. Willie Horne from Prestonpans in Edinburgh, Scotland was 3rd. Presentation took place in the Crover House after a fantastic meal.
