Report 30th of June 2010

Nothing like a few fish on the end of your line to get you going. The week started with a trip to Mound Dalton Lake, which is our main, featured this week. It’s a cracking little trout fisher, and the colours of these fish are unbelievable.

Speaking of colour, check out our tackle and gear feature for this week. Perch were on line, and the top tip this week is that you have to wear “blue nail polish”. Yes my daughter April was in the thick of the action on Ennell.

We guided Jay Schoenfarber on Ennell and hooked up with some nice perch and a few small pike. Jay from Lovington New York only had a few hours on the day, and will be back come September. Coarse Anglers are busy match fishing this weather, but bright conditions and hassle with pike entering swims kept catches down recently on the Royal Canal.

On the competition scene we are packed with July events, both game and coarse fishing. Recreation Angling Ireland are on Owel Saturday July 3rd.

July Irish Angler is out and is looking the business with RTE Sheana Keane on the front cover. My Foray this month took in the Lough Key Festival with my fellow midlandandler Anthony Scally taking Top Rod with a pike of 30lbs. Its a cracking Lake and worth a trip.

JAY ON ENNELL. I meet some great anglers and fantastic characters on my guiding and angling trips. Jay Schoenfarber is high up on the list after our recent day on Ennell. We had not much time as Jay had only a few hours in Mullingar. Even though the fishing was hard going we still managed a few very good perch, and eventually Jay landed his first pike from Westmeath. Not a monster but a welcome fish on a hard days fishing. Jay loves his fishing and regularly fished along the Jamaica Bay-NY, Long Island Sound and the waters around Cape Cod Massachusetts. I am looking forward to fishing with Jay once again come September, and I might be in for a bit of competition as he is taking over his own angling gear. Bring it on Jay Boy.

COARSE ANGLERS. We drifted up onto the Royal Canal last week and teamed up with members of Mullingar Coarse Angling Club. It was a glorious bright warm day, and certainly not what you wanted for match fishing. The water on some stretches was crystal clear, and the fish were spooked easily. Pike also played havoc with some competitors, and swims were hit hard with good pike taking anglers prize catches. Polish Angler Lukas Goraus won the top prize worth €400 sponsored by David O’ Malley of O’Malley’s Tackle and Jewelers Shop. Ned O’ Reilly was just pipped by ounces and finished 2nd, with Martin Quinn of the Irish Defence Forces charging in with 3rd spot. The lads have a busy summer season ahead of them and more match competitions are coming on line.

IRISH ANGLER MAGAZINE. The July Irish Angler magazine is out now and is packed with some eye-catching photos and net bursting news from all over Ireland. desigh expert Patrick Brown has done a splendid job on this Months edition, and it looks the business. The magazine editor David Dinsmore spent a day with RTE personality Sheana Keane on Killeen Castle, and they hooked up with some beautiful rainbow trout. My July Foray was on Lough Key and it produced some huge pike including a 30lbs beauty for Anthony Scally. Check it out on www.irishangler.ie

RECREATIONAL ANGLING IRELAND. This Saturday July 3rd RAI will visit Lough Owel just a few miles from Mullingar. The venue is Tullaghan Angling Centre and it’s an 11am start.

Recreational Angling Ireland (RAI) is a thirty-two county organization. The aim of the organization is to include all national angling bodies involved in coarse, sea and game fishing.

RAI has initiated and sponsored a youth angling training programme to encourage young people (8 – 18 year olds) into angling. Qualified / experienced anglers will give instruction and demonstration. Young people with little or no experience are both encouraged and welcome to attend. Inland Fisheries Ireland supports this event.
