Welcome to www.midlandangling.com
We are delighted to launch our website live this week, so you can keep up to date with what’s happening in the Angling World plus we can use all those shots of anglers having fun. Little did we know when we started our angling slot in the Topic newspapers that we would be writing in Sunday World and Irelands top angling mag Irish Angler. Yes July issue is out and Mullingar pike Angler Anthony Scally takes center page with his 30lbs pike from Lough Key.
Lene Anglers have being very busy of late. Unfortunately I missed some local competitions in recent weeks, and sadly will miss more as the summer days drift on. Glore anglers were also in action recently, and Peter Smith took Top rod, and we have the photo. I spent a few hours on the Royal Canal last Saturday with Mullingar Coarse Anglers. We got plenty of shots, which we will feature next week. David O, Malley pushed out the boat and sponsored €500 worth of prizes. I chilled out on Sunday, which was Fathers day. The Country might be in a hape, but Mullingar is alive and kicking .We had a fantastic day in town Sunday and the crack was mighty. Seven Days belted out some great songs and music lovers were reeling in the sunshine on Dominick Street.
PADDY DOLAN CUP. Last week we mentioned that Tom Fagan Chairman of Lough Lene won the Paddy Dolan Cup. Paddy is actually Vice-Chairman and is the brother of the late Joe Dolan. Tom produced a cracking pike of 5.46kg to take top rod. Young Philip Keena topped the junior section. The Wardell Cup was also fished recently on lene and Tyrrellpass angler Seamus Eighan won with a pike of 10lbs. Pierce Corroon was the junior winner with a fine pike of 7lbs plus.
GLORE ANGLERS. Lough Glore anglers were in action recently and Peter Smith topped the competition with a pike of 9lbs plus. Ciaran Mallen finished second with Joe O, Donnell taking 3rd spot. Glore will produce some good pike and perch in the coming weeks and is certainly worth a trip.
SHEELIN CLASSIC. Pat O Toole from Oakstown in trim was the winner of the Kells Anglers Sheelin Classic. Pat won a spanking new Sheelin boat and Trailor. Presentation took place in the Crover House, and it was top-drawer food and service. Well done to all involved in the Sheelin Classic. The lake is producing some great fish late in the evening, and dry fly anglers are catching a few sheelin beauties.
BROSNA. Sadly my favourite River in Westmeath is in some sorry state. The Brosna is chocked with weeds and you can forget about fishing it for the rest of the season. When I was a young lad the river was managed and now once a year a machine comes down and rips the life out of this fantastic fish haven. The River is slowly being turned into a Canal, and certainly needs some work.
S.R.F.B. BOSS RETIRES. Yes the Shannon Regional Fishery Board Boss Eamon Cusack is retiring. I have known Eamon for the past few years and I will miss my few meetings with him. Eamon will stand down as Chief Executive Officer of the S.R.F.B. The venue is the splendid Clarion Hotel in Limerick this Friday evening . We wish Eamon all the best and hopefully he will drop down to Mullingar for a few days fishing.
MULLINGAR COARSE ANGLERS.Mullingar coarse anglers were in action last Saturday on the Royal Canal. We dropped up and pictured the lads fishing the town stretch at the back of Harbout Court Shopping Centre. Top Rod was Polish angler Lukas Goraus who lives in Moate, Co Westmeath. We have a huge Gallery of photos from the match competition and will hold back till next week.
MIKIE TAKES SILVER. Well done to my nephew Mikie Kelly on winning silver in the Special Olympics recently in Limerick. Mikie is a member of Lough Lene Anglers and won the medal playing basketball. He had a fantastic weekend and was pictured with the Limerick Rose.
That’s it for now, I will feature Rise meeting on the site this coming week.
