Report 14th of July 2010

ALL CAUGHT UP.

It has certainly being a busy week in the Angling World. Once again we have exclusive photos and angling reports. It was an action packed weekend on the competition scene, and myself and daughter April were in the thick of the action. Yes Derravaragh produced some fine pike. Earlier in the week Ennell once again fished well for perch and pike, plus we got a nice trout. This week’s feature we cover a small stretch of the Boyne controlled by Longwood Anglers Association. Also we publish a very colourful character’s fluorescent Green pike no less. It’s not the first green pike I caught, but the fish was in mint condition. Trout anglers are gearing up for the first Peter competition next Friday night on Lough Lene. The Lake fished well over the weekend and all going well a few Lene crackers will feature next Friday night. We have a boatload of photos this week, and reports. We have had some fantastic feedback from anglers on our web site, and we will do our best to keep up to date with reports.

GREEN MACHINE. Last Saturday I teamed up with one of Irelands Top International Trout Fly anglers. Like many anglers I love the shooting game, and my angling pal last Saturday was Mick McCormack one of our Midland Shooters Syndicate members. You never know I might start a shooting web page, just to hit the Greens. They will destroy angling and shooting and the sooner they are out the better. Anyway back to our days fishing. It bucketed rain all day Saturday but the fishing was mighty. We had some super perch and I latched onto a cracking pike in the double figures. I was trawling a small Rapale lure when the pike hit. The colours on this fighting machine were magical, and it was Fluorescent Green. Not the first green pike I got on Ennell, but certainly the best greener I got in some years.

IN THE BLOOD. Its always hearth warming when your kids take up your chosen sport. It’s another story when they start getting the better of the old master. I had to swallow my pride last Sunday on Derravaragh as my 11-year-old daughter April hammered me in the family competition. We had six pike on the day with April boating a fine fish of 15lbs 7oz. Barry Darby and young son Jack won the senior section with a pike of 16lbs. The Lake will produce some fine fish in the coming weeks and is certainly worth a trip. Our best lures were storm trout and perch, which we will feature in our August Gear and Tackle special. I was chatting to Paul O’Callaghan of Anglers World, and he has some great offers coming on line for summer piking.

LENE ANGLERS. Lough Lene Anglers are in action next Friday night July16th. On the night the Larry Mulligan Memorial Cup will be fished. This fly fishing competition sees the start of out night fishing, and it will draw a huge entry. The club has some 450 members and the late Larry was highly respected on the club scene. The lake has fished well in recent days, and reports of May Fly hatches have anglers buzzing. It’s hard to believe I was competition captain in 1984, where have the years gone. In time we will feature a reeling in the years slot, and I have some great pics from years back. Naturally I did not take some as I can go back to 1950. You want to see the gear in those days. Ok just one shot this week. My old angling pal Con Hope in the 50 gear. I remember Fergal Keane of RTE Radio doing a Gone Fishing program with me some years back. He asked Con what was the biggest changes he has seen on the Angling scene, his answer was simple Waterproof Gear and Motor Cars. You could stay out in all weather conditions, and travel to fish.

PETER MC GUIGAN TO FISH FOR IRELAND. Young Collinstown Angler Peter McGuigan will travel over to England and fish for the Irish Youths team on Grafham Waters. The team departs on Sunday 25th of July with practice days on Monday Tuesday and finals on July 28th. This week local Tackle dealer Clive Doyle who himself is a former Youths International sponsored young Peter with some super equipment. Clive runs The Big Fish Angling Centre as you head into Castlepollard. It’s packed with loads of top angling lures and clothing. We wish young Peter all the best on his travels, and the Irish Team.

DERRAVARAGH STOCKING PROGRAMM. Last Sunday derravaragh Anglers Association held their Grand Raffle, which was in aid of the brown trout stocking program. Tickets were on sale the last few weeks and at €5 a pop sold well. The draw took place at Donore Shore and winners from all over Ireland were in the prize money. Derravaragh Anglers association would like to thank all who supported this stocking program raffle. Brian Donohue of Longford took top prize of €500. Mark Murphy of Enfield, Co Meath was 2nd and picked up €300. Elsie Thombe of cark won €200, and Susan Delamere of Cloughan Westmeath 4th picking up €100.

GONE FISHING .We have received some fantastic reports from anglers all across Ireland in recent weeks. Midland Angling is catching. In the coming weeks we will feature more net bursting reports and photos from the Angling World. If any clubs have competitions coming on line let us know, and we will feature in the competition section.
