Willie Quain here.

Don’t know if you remember me, we met once or twice, I photographed JJ’s wedding a few years ago, hope you are keeping well.

I was up fishing on Mask on the 15th with the brother in law and he landed a beaut of a brown trout, I know he would love to see it featured on the website as he mentioned your name and the Catch of the Month comp on the way home….

I wrote a few words below about the day and I have included a few shots taken on my compact camera…. If you include it anywhere it would be great…. Thanks

Johnny Greene is a regular visitor to Lough Mask for trout fishing, while the amount of visits vary every year, he will always make the trip on the 15th of February for the first day of fishing. This year like most myself Willie and Stephen Quain (Johnny’s brother in laws) went along. After an 8.30am departure from Athlone we were on the water at 10 o’clock pushing off from Cahir Peir on the eastern shore.

There was a fair 11-15 knot north westerly wind, from experience and preference Johnny decided to stay on the eastern side of the lake fishing a mixture of choppy waters and calmer waters when on the inside of the islands. The clouds were fast moving providing a mixture between blue skies, overcast and plenty of mist for the morning.

With three rods and several bait changes there was only one trout (under 2lb) caught on a blue and gold Tasmanian Devil before we broke for lunch (a well appreciated stew that Johnny brought) at about 1 o’clock on one of the islands. During the break the winds eased off considerably and the second half of the day saw a calmer lake with winds lifting from time to time.

At around 3 o’clock the wind was up we were trolling between Devenish island and Cahir Bay, when Johnny got stuck in a fish. He knew from the start that the fight being put up was from something on the big side. After about 10 to 15 mins he got the fish alongside and into the net, a fabulous looking . The bait being used was a Kingdom Mars (Skeleton Lure). Needless to say this one fish made for a great day for all involved and in Johnny’s own words “I am a long time visiting Lough Mask with the vision of a catch like this in mind”, now it’s real and here are some photo’s from the day.
