The annual NCFFI All Ireland championships got under way this year, on the banks of Lough Muckno, Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan, on the last weekend of July with no fewer than four events taking place. This year saw nearly 210 coarse anglers attending all events.

The Championship weekend kicked off on Saturday the 24th with the Junior All Ireland and 20 of our newest and brightest anglers taking on White Island. The U13 event was won by Thomas Quinlan with a weight of 13lb 5oz and the U18 event was won by the very promising James Gargan with 17lb 7oz.

Also on the Saturday, the annual Garda Open took place with 60 anglers taking part. The Garda Open was fished on both Black Island and Concra Wood, the winning weight for the event was over 17kg with close back up weights.

Sunday the 25th saw the main event take place and 120 anglers (both male and female) competing for the coveted title of All Ireland Champion.

The weather conditions similar to Saturday (over-cast and very warm) but the wind blowing from the opposite direction and away from White Island and some light showers.

The total weight of those who weighed in was just under 700kg with an average of 6.5kg (14.3lb) per angler.

The eventual winner of the men’s event was Peader Horten, Peader had a weight of 23.150kg  with a mixed bag of Bream and Roach from White Island B, in second was David Herron with 17.300kg  from Concra D and in a very close third position was 2008 World Champion silver medallist Willie Wheeler with 17.260kg. The Ladies event was won by Louise Cormican with 3.960kg form Concra D. In all 27 anglers had 9kg or more. A full list of results can be found on http://www.ncffi.ie/.

The NCFFI would like to thank all that took part in what was the largest All Ireland for many years, we would also like to thank Inland Fisheries Ireland for their support on both days, Richard Caplice and Lough Muckno Coarse Angling Club & Garda CAC.
