There was a good turn out on the day with over 30 youths turning out and it was great to see so many girls participating.We were lucky with the weather on the day with the rain holding off. There was a marque set up for registration on the banks of the Marina,where all the fishing gear and bait was supplied from and then the demonstrations were held in the hall beside the Marina.

With Levi Caffrey and Paddy O Rourke giving demonstrations on the fine art of Pike Fly tying and interacting with the youths and teaching them how to do it for them selves. Danny Quinn and Declan Day gave demonstrations on all mediums of coarse fishing from waggler fishing to the pole to the feeder. Chris Pender educating the youths on all aspects of Pike fishing with some very colourfull lures and the techniques of dead baiting and the effectiveness of the sink and draw method.

We also had our two sponsors for the day on hand with Inland Fisheries Ireland promoting the Awareness week and Griffin and Hawe of Athy displaying some of the large selection of Fishing equipment that they have instore.

The event ran from 2pm until 5pm, we then brought all the youths and seniors into the exhibition hall where they all were presented with a tackle box with various fishing tackle within it. We would like to thank all the Volounteers on the day, with special thanks to the Civil Defence which offered there services for us. We would also like to thank our two sponsors for there support as the event would not of been possible without them. The senior members of the club who dedicated a lot of time in terms of preparing the venue and not to forget of coarse the fishing widows who prepared all the refreshments and food for all who attended.

Our next Youths event will take place on the 17th of July, which will be our annual fun day out and barbeque.

TEDDY HUGHES MEMORIAL OPEN FLY FISHING COMPETITION

This is our next event which will be held on Lough Calla just outside Ballinasloe on Sunday May the 29th, check in will be at 10.30 a.m sharp and fishing will be from 11a.m untill 4p.m. All are welcome, both seniors and juniors, the presentation will take place in Brian Smiths pub, Leinster Street, Athy, Co.Kildare at 7.30p.m that evening. There was a good turn out despite the poor weather with about 30 youhts turning out for the event ranging in age from 5 to 15. It was great to see so many girls fishing and the fishing was quite good with all youths catching mixed bags of  roach, hybrids, perch, rudd and some cracking bream.

We had a joint first with Lewis Parr of Carlow and my own daughter Faye Caffrey of Athy(5 years old!!!), both catching a mixed bag of 22 fish.

Fishing started at 1.30pm on the canal at the packing stables Athy, Co.Kildare and when all in was called at 3.15pm, all youths wanted to continue fishing. So they did until 

4.00pm when we had the barbeque, where the enjoyed the cullinery skills of our own committee member Gerry Cullen. Well done Gerry, not an easy task to cater for 70 odd people all at once.

On behalf of the club, I would like to thank everyone who helped to make the day a success and a very special thanks to all our sponsors, Gerry McStraw of Carlow Angling Centre for the bait, Canada Dry for their donation and Dave McStay for all the food. Without the support of our sponsors and the work carried out by the committee in preparing the venue, the event would not be possible. We look forward to hosting this event once again next year.

We would also like to wish all the Athy and Carlow youths the very best of luck this weekend when they travel up to Castleblayney, Co.Monaghan tonight to compete in the all Irelands tomorrow. We hope that they all bag up!!!!
